Homelessness in Manchester

Homelessness is a growing problem within Manchester, as a result of a range of factors. Recent cuts to housing benefits as well as the growth in precarious work have had a significant impact upon the lives of many people, increasing pressure upon homeless charities city wide.

Nationwide, homelessness has become more pervasive over the past six years. In December 2010 the number of households in temporary accommodation was 48,010. By June 2016, this figure had grown by 52% to 73,120.

Within Manchester this national trend can be seen. In 2012/13 565 households were given homeless relief, compared to 370 households the year before. This represents a 37% increase.

I'm worried that I won't make it through the next winter.

Of those who receive homeless relief in Manchester, 37% have been a victim of domestic abuse, which is significantly higher than the national average. These people need specialist attention to ensure that they can recover, as well as housing and support. My design must consider the range of people who will be using my project, and the address the complexity of their individual situations.

Rough sleeping has a very real impact upon peoples lives. They are more at risk to abuse and violence, as well as being exposed to Manchester's harsh winter weather. This is instantly evident when you compare figures for life expectancy against national and international averages. Professional medical help must be present within my project to try and address this imbalance.

With the exception of 2012, the number of rough sleepers on the streets of Manchester has been growing year on year. This is part of a national trend which has been gradually getting worse since the 2008 financial crisis and subsequent periods of economic austerity. Such a rise is putting increased pressure upon charities and government organisations, which are increasingly seeing funds cut.

In 2016 Manchester City Council issued a Public Space Protection Order which banned the pitching of tents within the city centre. This has arguably only helped to worsen the situation for many of those who find themselves sleeping rough. I must think about more proactive, yet feasible, solutions to the growth in the number rough sleepers in recent years.
