Developing Internal Form

Maintaining of distinct room blocks ensure that the residents' independence is maintained.

Moderation of views using floor/ceiling level changes.

Dead spaces here can be altered to become someone's business or perhaps studio. This will form a vital part of the resident's rehabilitation.

Placing of these residential blocks in this location will ensure that everyone will be given a view into the outside space between the buildings. Development of landscaping here will ensure that these views are positive.

Light wells could be used to allow for sunlight penetration within the circulation space of the building.

These spaces could also be used for quiet contemplation for the residents, or other recreational activities. Ability to see across levels ensures visual continuity.

Movement from public to private areas of the building, facilitated by the circulation space.

Movement of these light wells to the external edge of the building allows for the creation of more substantial spaces, whilst also offering a flat surface for light to bounce off of, increasing daylighting on the ground floor.

Circulation should be used to make the most of these light wells, offering views into them as people move around the building.

Perhaps the façade could open up to an extent, allowing for the building to benefit from natural ventilation during the warmer months. Translucent panelling could be used here?

Use of semi-permeable panelling on top of the main façade could be used to ensure complete user control of daylighting and privacy.

On a basic level, slats of some sort would help to diffuse light and reduce views into internal spaces, important given the building's urban context.

Roof gardens could be used as part of rehabilitation process for residents, as well as offering a quiet space for counselling or contemplation.

Placing the social space directly on top of the café reduces the overall area of the café, whilst also ensuring that the two are more integrated. As a result of this, residents will need to be provided with additional space for interaction with each other, which will provide more adequate privacy.
