Iteration 1
From the site elevations I completed as part of the Big Draw, I then cut out plans from my precedents to help me think about how my spaces might interact and fit together. This process also helped me to refine my ideas of what my clients would require of the building, which influenced my overall programme. These four initial iterations can be seen below.
WEAKNESS
Connection of public cafe and private residence could prove to be problematic. A clear definition between the two spaces would offer more independence to the people living in the housing.
STRENGTH
Placing an external wall around the main entrance helps to block noise pollution from the nearby road.
OPPORTUNITY
Ramp could be used as a focal point within the entrance, establishing a connection between the external and internal spaces.
Perforated façade to diffuse light and ensure privacy.
MSB Estudi use bamboo to create more ambient lighting in their bar.
THREAT
Scale of the café/bar could be too large, meaning the space may lack intimacy.
STRENGTH
Light wells in the residential space could be used to provide additional daylighting,
STRENGTH
Perforated second skin could be used to provide additional natural light, whilst ensuring privacy for the residents.
WEAKNESS
External wall may make the entrance feel a little claustrophobic.
OPPORTUNITY
Large roof space could provide the ability for a garden in which food for the Cafe could be grown.
STRENGTH
Use of a bridge to connect hosuing block to roof garden allows for easy access. This means that this space can be used for socialisation by the residents.
WEAKNESS
The rectilinear nature of the buidling could make it a little boring both internally and externally.
