Iteration 5
STRENGTH
Continuity of street elevation maintained by matching new buildings with existing buildings along the line of the road.
STRENGTH
Moving the social space for the residents to the back of the site ensures that sound is dampened from the nearby road. It also makes it a non-public space suitable for counselling and private communication.
STRENGTH
Placing the café along the busy Chester road makes it more accessible for the public and reduces footfall through garden areas, meaning residents will have more privacy whilst maintaining a dialogue with the local community.
WEAKNESS
Stacking the housing in this way is an interesting concept but doesn't really work in this instance aesthetically. Try to recover connecting of blocks presents in the previous iteration.
OPPORTUNITY
Look at how ceiling height changes can be used to create interesting forms internally, as well as represent programme externally.
Café's connection to the businesses next to it works well by engaging with the local community, as well as preserving the integrity of the elevation along Chester Road.
Bevelling off of corner where Chester Road and Dorset Street meet makes my building feel less formal. It also helps to make Dorset Street feel more open, as it is now with the existing car park.
Preservation of existing cut through that people use to get to the tram. The inclusion of gardens will make this short cut more pleasant for the local community.
